Sermon 65, Job 17:1-5
Calvin:
"Let us learn to bridle our emotions..."
"...let us learn...not to desire God's glory be reduced for the sake our comfort."
"He [God] wants us to be content with his mere word..."
"...let us learn not to have confidence in ourselves..."
"...let us be ready to be afflicted..."
In summary, our emotions are bad and untrustworthy, we should not seek comfort, we should be content only with His words, we should have no confidence in ourselves, and we should constantly be expecting affliction. Why is any of this potentially bearable? Because our lives here are brief (we are tourists in this world) and our next life is what we look forward to. Now that's a mindset.
