Walking Through Uz with Calvin

Divine Judgment and Sovereignty (The Unchanging Plan)

Malachi 1:2-4: God says, "I have loved Jacob, but I have hated Esau." God chose to make Esau's descendants (Edom) a ruined, desolate place, and God promises that if Edom tries to rebuild, He will tear it down again.

James 5:11: We count those people as blessed who patiently endured suffering. You have heard of the endurance of Job and you know how God finally rewarded him (or what the Lord's purpose was for him).

Ezekiel 14:14: Even if Noah, Daniel, and Job were in the land, because of their righteousness, they could only save themselves—not the nation.

Lamentations 4:21: The prophet speaks to the proud nation of Edom (Esau’s descendants), telling them their time of rejoicing will end, and the cup of God's judgment will pass to them, leaving them exposed and disgraced.

The Nature of Humanity (Sin, Hypocrisy, and Faith)

Exodus 1:16: The king of Egypt ordered the Hebrew midwives to kill all the baby boys born to the Israelite women.

Hebrews 11:6, 7: It is impossible to please God without faith. Noah, by faith, was warned by God about the future, prepared an ark to save his family, and condemned the world.

1 Chronicles 12:33: The men of Zebulun who came to David were ready for war, serving in the army with complete loyalty, not double-hearted, and were skilled in battle.

Psalm 12:2: People lie to their neighbors; their words are smooth and flattering, but they speak with a divided heart.

Jeremiah 5:3: God’s people have been beaten and hurt, but they still refuse to feel pain or repent. They have made their faces harder than rock and refuse to turn back to God.

Galatians 5 (Context): The chapter contrasts the freedom of Christ and the importance of walking by the Spirit with the works of the flesh and the yoke of slavery under the Law.

Matthew 22:40: All the Law and the Prophets depend on these two commandments: to love God and to love your neighbor.

Luke 16:15: Jesus said to the Pharisees: You are the ones who try to look good to people, but God knows your hearts. What people value highly is disgusting to God.

Ephesians 6:12: Our real fight is not against people, but against powerful evil spirits and forces of darkness in the heavenly realm.
